Obituary Preview: Jan Ellis Johnson was born to Mildred Adeline (Nyre) Johnson and Earl Alton Johnson on May 9, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He and his older brother Jay Paul Johnson grew up in Lanesboro, Minnesota where their dad was superintendent. Throughout Jan's life he regaled his family, friends and sometimes strangers with stories of his nicknamed classmates and their adventures in the small town of Lanesboro.

After high school Jan briefly attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout and then transferred to and graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in elementary education. He would later go on to earn his master's degree. During the summers Jan worked on rivers, lakes and streams for the DNR.

Later in his college career, Jan was introduced to Linda who worked as a nurse at the University of Minnesota Hospital. Jan and Linda were set up by Jan's sister-in-law, Jane, who also worked as a nurse with Linda. Jan and Linda were married on December 23, 1966.

Jan began and ended his career in the Byron School District. During those more than 30 years, he was an elementary teacher in grades four, five and six, but spent most of his time as a fourth-grade teacher. He was best-known for his teaching style that captured the student's attention through story and taught them a lesson at the same time.

During summers, Jan worked with a fellow teacher whitewashing dairy barns in the area. He enjoyed the work and the connections he made with the farmers.

Over the course of his life, Jan enjoyed canoeing and camping with friends and family on the Chippewa River in Wisconsin. He had a rich social life and enjoyed hosting spontaneous gatherings, and an annual corn feed the evening of the Byron Bears homecoming football game.

Jan was passionate about the home he designed and built in the mid-80s. He transformed what was once a pasture into an elegant yard including a spring-fed pond and a rustic hot tub. He maneuvered granite boulders found on the land and arranged them to create a Japanese-style garden around the pond. He expressed much of his creativity through plants and loved studying ways to add new features to his yard.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents and his brother. He is survived by his wife Linda, children Andrea and her partner Mark, Olaf and daughter-in-law Channary, granddaughters Anisa and Analena, and nephews Chris and Peder. Jan will be remembered as a quintessential storyteller and as a man who never knew a stranger.

Obituary Preview: Marcia Rose (Boddicker) Dircks was lifted by the hands of her Lord on Monday, September 25, 2023 to join her family in heaven.

Marcia was born at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 11, 1948. She was welcomed by her parents Cyril and Luella Boddicker of Newhall, Iowa. When she arrived home she was greeted by her big sister, Dorothy Lou Bodddicker. Marcia went to school in Newhall until her senior year when it closed and she graduated at Benton Community School in 1966. Marcia began nursing training at Eastern Iowa Community College in Davenport, Iowa and finished with her LPN in 1967. She was united in marriage to Herbert William Dircks of Cedar Rapids, Iowa on November 18, 1967 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall, Iowa. Herb and Marcia moved to Waterloo, IA where she was a nurse at Allen Hospital and Herb was beginning his apprenticeship with H and H Machine Tool Company. While in Waterloo, her first child was born, Jason Lewis Dircks in 1969. They moved back to Cedar Rapids in the Cedar Hills area. A daughter, Jennifer Ann Dircks joined the family in 1973. Marcia worked in Cedar Rapids as a nurse for 32 years, mostly at Mercy Hospital medical floor and onsite geriatric care center in Hallmar. Marcia got her RN degree from Kirkwood Community College in 1988, and again for her BSN in Nursing Administration. In 1995 she graduated from the College of St. Francis with her BS in Nursing. She completed a Master of Nursing Administration around 2005.

Outside of work and school, Marcia enjoyed motorcycle rides, camping, and house boating on the Coralville Reservoir and Hannen Lake in Iowa until Herb's death in 2009. Marcia was a true follower of her children's and grandchildren's sports and activities. She took on all kinds of weather outside at track meets, football, soccer, baseball, and softball games. She sat through hundreds of basketball, wrestling, swimming, and ice skating events. She was an avid ice skating fan, never missing a competition on TV. When the Olympics were on she watched every event possible, cheering on the USA. In recent years, Marcia enjoyed going to concerts including Andre Bucceli, Queen, Keith Urban, Chicago, Bon Jovi, and Neil Diamond. She also loved to play cards with friends and family.

Marcia was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Dircks (2009), both of her parents, Cyril (2005) and Luella (1999) Boddicker, as well as both of her sisters, Marlys Boddicker (1946) and Dorothy Lou Lawton (Boddicker) (2016), and her niece Ann Lawton (2020).

Marcia leaves behind her son, Jason Dircks (Kimberly), grandchildren Declan, Natalia, and Gavin all of Williamstown, NJ. Her daughter, Jennifer Reynolds (Joseph) and grandchildren Cyril Ballew (Thorne), Gabriel, Abigail, and Sofia all of Rochester, MN. She leaves nephews Douglas Lawton (Karen), Ronald Lawton (Jane), Todd Lawton (Amy), and niece Karin Lawton-Dunn, 10 great nieces and nephews, and 9 great-great nieces and nephews.

Marcia retired and moved to Rochester, MN in 2012 to be closer to Jennifer and Joseph's family. Planning for elderly care, Marcia, Jennifer and Joseph's family moved into a larger house in 2020. Marcia wanted to see corn and flowers growing and eat fresh eggs in her last days. Jennifer and Joseph made that happen with a sweeping window view fields and a flock of the cutest ducks waddling around the yard. Jennifer began planting Marcia's favorite flowers in the sight line of Marcia's bedroom window. After three years the garden includes, daylilies, tulips, daffodils, and giant allium. Of all the plants, her very most favorite was the dinner plate hibiscus. When the yard was booming with fresh wild and planted flowers she most often preferred to leave them so that they could grow and multiply. In honor of this idea, we would like to add to Marcia's flower garden to memorialize her love of enjoying flowers. Please consider sending a perennial flowering plant or gift card instead of fresh flowers or houseplants. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11AM on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Pax Christi Catholic Church (4135 18th Ave, Rochester, MN) with visitation held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Another visitation will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 4-7 PM at Teahen Funeral Home (3100 F Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, IA).

Interment will take place at 11AM on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Mount Calvary Cemetery (375 32nd Street Dr. SE, Cedar, Rapids, IA) with a celebration to follow at the nearby Irish Democrat Pub.

Obituary Preview: Rose Ann Enquist, age 87, of Rochester, Minnesota died on September 24, 2023, at the Stewartville Care Center.

Rose was born on September 13, 1936, the daughter of Clarence and Lucille (Rehling) Drazan. She attended Pine Island High School. In 1956, Rose married Gordon Riess. They had 6 children together and raised their family in Rochester until his death in 1992. Rose later married David Enquist on October 18, 2000, and they traveled the world together until his death in 2016.

Rose held a variety of jobs including HyVee, Firestone, National Bushing and waitressing. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and was thought of to have a "green thumb." She also enjoyed canning, traveling, going to casinos and most especially, spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Lonnie Riess, Julie Riess, Kelly Gehring, and Tracy (Lori) Riess; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Gordon Riess, second husband David Enquist, son Owen Riess, daughter Debbie Simmons, sisters, Nancy Clemens and Catherine Drazan, and brothers, David Drazan and Joseph Drazan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023, from 5-7PM at Ranfranz and Vine Remembrance and Reception Centre (5482 Royal PL NW, Rochester, MN). Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Steven Neal "Steve" Martin, age 81, of Rochester, Minnesota, died on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Rochester Methodist Hospital.

Steve was born to Stuart and Nora (Seeverts) Martin in Sargeant, MN on February 18, 1942. He graduated from Hayfield High School in 1960 and went on to attend Riverland Community College in Austin. He briefly worked at Crenlo in Rochester. Then, he began a wonderful career working at the local IBM plant for over 41 years. He held various positions along the way, working as a manager in the later years.

Steve married Donna Kapsner on July 27, 1968, and in their union had one son, Chris. Steve was a proud father and very much enjoyed both coaching and watching his son's various sporting events. He was often the manager of Chris' hockey teams and kept close to the boards of every JM Rockets game. In his later years, he spent time watching his grandchildren play soccer and hockey. Steve was very active in his own right. In his younger years, he played baseball and softball. As an adult, he fell in love with the sport of golf and was an avid player in the Rochester community. He was a long-time member of the Eastwood men's league, and many of his best friends were made through the great game of golf.

Steve and Donna enjoyed 15 wonderful years wintering in Hilton Head, South Carolina. They would spend our coldest months there golfing, biking, exploring the island, and enjoying friends. Among friends and family, Steve was known to have a quick wit and a dry sense of humor.

Steve is survived by his wife Donna; son Chris (Natalie) Martin; and grandchildren Lars, Danny and Boe.

He is preceded in death by his parents Stuart and Nora Martin; brothers Chancey Martin and Duane "Pete" Martin; and beloved niece, Micki.

A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at Bethel Lutheran Church (810 3rd Ave SE, Rochester, MN). Obituary Preview: Sharon M. Town, 81, of Stewartville, MN, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Stewartville Care Center after ongoing health issues.

Sharon May (Bakken) Town was born September 26, 1941 to parents, Odien and Lorrain (Hetzel) Bakken in Rochester, MN. When Sharon was young, she was at home helping her mother care for her siblings as she was the oldest of twelve children.

Sharon had several hobbies which included reading, dancing, watching TV, and listening to country and western music. She especially loved Elvis Presley and John Wayne and would shake a leg every chance she got. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir in Marion growing up.

Sharon is survived by her children, Cheryl (Fred) Murphy-Long of Rochester, MN and Allen Smith of Duluth, MN; a sister, Marilyn (John) Newell of Rochester, MN; brothers, Steve (Bev) Bakken of Rochester, MN, Dale Bakken of Stewartville, MN, Richard (Jackie) Bakken of Virginia; grandchildren, Ashley, Zachary, Rachel, Kaia, Allen and Bella; great-grandchildren, Rileigh, Mikayla, Cailey, Juliet, Leslie, Kady, Bailey and Jacob her beloved great-grandson. She is preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and two sisters; and three great-grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Karen Lee Canzanello passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at her home following a year-long battle with abdominal cancer of unknown primary.

Karen was born on August 26th, 1952, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA to Walter and Eleanor (Carleton) Buraczynski. She grew up in Wellesley, MA and in 1970 graduated from Wellesley High School where she excelled in academics, lacrosse, and swimming. She then attended the University of Connecticut and graduated with BS degree in Nursing.

After working for several years in the emergency department and the neonatal ICU at Boston Children's Hospital she obtained a master's degree in Maternal Child Health from the Boston College School of Nursing. She worked as an OB-GYN nurse practitioner at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Harvard Community Health Plan, Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC and as an Obstetrics nursing instructor at Winona State University. Karen retired in 2018 after a 25-year career in Women's Health at Olmsted Medical Center. Much of this was related to following her husband through his medical training and academic faculty positions. Her years in OB-GYN at OMC gave her the most joy, particularly seeing the grown children of the women she cared for during their pregnancies. She was often thanked for her loving care by old patients throughout Rochester that she would run into as teachers, servers in restaurants, hairdressers, dog groomers, etc.

She met her future husband, Vincent Canzanello, at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH in August of 1969 when they were both 16 years old. They were inseparable from that first day on and married in 1975 on the campus of Boston College. They were blessed with three sons, Andrew (Sarah) of Edwards CO, Eric (Katie) of Keene NH, and Nicholas (Megan) of Rochester MN and subsequently 8 grandchildren. She was an outstanding "hockey mom" in every good sense of the term raising 3 successful hockey playing sons.

Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and was subsequently a pioneering member of the Pink Ribbon Mentor program at Mayo Clinic, Join the Journey, and the Making Waves Dragon boat group. She received numerous accolades from those she mentored in the Pink Ribbon Mentors program, many of whom went on to become mentors themselves.

Karen is survived by her husband of 48 years, Vincent, her mother Eleanor, her sister Patricia (Jim) Frisone, her 3 sons and 8 grandchildren (Connor, Graham, Bailey, Ayla, Nico, Ella, Lauren, and Brody). She was preceded in death by her father Walter.

The family is particularly grateful for the outstanding and compassionate care provided to Karen by Dr. Harry Fuentes Bayne and the chemotherapy nurses in the Mayo Clinic Department of Medical Oncology.

Obituary Preview: Raymond Joseph Neis, age 79, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 16, 2023. He was born February 12, 1944 in Osage, IA to Christina (Pappas) and Raymond J. Neis SR. His mom always said when he was born that an airplane was flying overhead.

Ray lived in a number of small towns in Iowa when growing up, usually on farms. When he was 13 his family moved to Wykoff, MN. Don't blink when you drive through or you will miss it! During his school years there, he was a great basketball player and was very proud of this. He always said he wasn't too crazy about school.

When Ray was 18, he married Margaret Conlan. They had 4 children: Rochelle, Michael, Ray and Jennifer. They later divorced. To say the least, Ray was a workaholic and did not like to sit still. He always said, "What should I do today?" He worked on farms, worked for a dairy, and he delivered products to schools, businesses and homes. He was quite happy to become a Realtor and has helped many people find great homes. He had a bucket load of patience and was never pushy. He has been in real estate for 45+ years. His wife Cyndee joined him in real estate for the last 23 years. They made a good team!

When real estate was at a low ebb, he decided to drive school bus for special ed kids and loved doing it. He was very kind to all of the kids and they loved him.

Ray and Cyndee married in 2004 in an absolutely beautiful wedding. They waited to get married as Cyndee had had a stroke and wanted to make sure she wouldn't be a burden. It was one of the most wonderful days in their life. Ray was such a good, kind man to everyone and he will always be remembered that way!

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Ray; his sister Janet; his brother Eugene; and pups Maxx, Haylee and Emmalyn.

He is survived by his wife, Cyndee Parker-Neis and Sarah Parker who considers Ray her Papa for the last 20+ years; his children Rochelle (Mark), Michael (Chris), Jennifer (Matthew); his brother Ron (Lala), brother Robert (Lois), sister Maridean (Marv) and his wonderful sister Rosemary (whom Ray took care of his entire life); grandchildren Nick (Melissa) and Andrew; and his sweet dogs Jaxi and Lainey Rae; and many nieces and nephews.

Ray will always be remembered as the sweetest man ever. He will be sorely missed.

Obituary Preview: Lowell Henry Penz of Rochester, Minnesota, quietly stepped into his heavenly home on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the age of 84. Born on June 12, 1939, to Carlton and Ruth Penz, Lowell's journey in life was marked by hard work and dedication.

Lowell attended Rochester schools, graduating in 1957 and went on to graduate from South Dakota State with a degree in civil engineering. After completing his education, he returned to work with his father at Rochester Block & Supply. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing and successfully managing several local businesses, including Fraser Construction, Homes of Harmony, several mobile home parks, and Elcor Realty and numerous real estate projects. Lowell also mined gold in Alaska with his brother, David.

Lowell's biggest contributions may be in underground development. Nearly all of downtown Rochester bears the imprint of his expert demolition and reconstruction prowess as do several housing subdivisions. The most fulfilling endeavor was his involvement in building Timothy Chapel and Elizabeth Lodge for Autumn Ridge Church.

In 1958, Lowell married Darlene Peterson, and they were blessed with four children. In October 1995 Lowell found love again and married Sharon Morris Schultz welcoming Sharon's children into his family brought joy to Lowell's life, as did spending time with his own children.

Beyond his professional and family life, Lowell had an adventurous spirit. He took to the skies, reveling in the joy of flying and running the fixed-base operation at Rochester Airport. Additionally, Lowell was an avid hunter and had experiences hunting in numerous destinations such as British Columbia and Argentina. His love of motorcycles took him on long bike rides throughout the United States.

Lowell is survived by his spouse Sharon Penz; children Daniel (Terri) Penz, Rick (Christin) Penz, Tamara (Rob) McBane; grandchildren Todd (Autumn) Penz, Cory (Hilary) Penz, Jared (Kristen) Penz, Troy (Hannah) Penz, Matt (Kate) Penz, Drew (Laura) Penz, Nate (Lauren) Penz, Robbie (McKenna Ryan) McBane, Kate McBane, Ian McBane, Lilly McBane, and Alec McBane; Great grandchildren Brecken, Audrey, Sienna, Henry, Willow, Oliver, Judah, Mason, Emma, Sawyer, Bowen, Sophie, Lucy, Ella, Annie, Emily, William, and Olivia; sister Janice Perkins; Step children Mark (Silveria) Schultz, Stephen Schultz, David (Svetlana) Schultz; step daughter in law Monica Schultz; and step grandchildren David Schultz, Ruth Schultz, Ian Schultz, Paul Schultz, Mathew Schultz, Daniel Schultz, Rachel Schultz, Trinity Schultz, and Brianna Schultz.

Obituary Preview: Dr. Robert Leonard Phyliky, age 87, died at the Waters on September 8, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Morristown, NJ to Dr. Harold and Idabelle Phyliky on April 8. 1936. As a boy he was active in Boy Scouts, De Molay and the Methodist Church. Following his graduation from Morristown High School he attended Drew University in Madison, NJ where he majored in Zoology. After leaving Drew he became a medical student at Gemente Universitat in Amsterdam, Holland. After completing his pre-clinical years, he transferred to Albany Medical College in Albany New York where he received his MD degree. After graduating in 1965 he spent the next 10 years in the US Army. He completed his internship at Triple Army Hospital, Honolulu Hawaii; his internal medicine residency at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas; his fellowship in Hematology at Tuft's New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. When he returned to Brook Army Medical Center he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and became the Chief of Hematology. While in San Antonio he became involved with the Bexar County Anemia Association. For his work with them he was made "Mayor of La Vieta". Upon leaving the service he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1975 he accepted positions at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as a consultant in Hematology, Hematopathology and as an associate professor at Mayo Medical School. He was named a Distinguished Mayo Clinician and received the Peter Jay Sharp Distinguished Clinician Award.

During his years at Mayo, he wrote many articles and abstracts. He founded the CLL research group (Calypso) and served as its chair for many years. His greatest joy was teaching the medical students and residents. He loved his patients and truly believed the patient comes first. He was known for his kindness and gracious spirit. He always answered his pager" This is Dr. Phyliky. How can I help you?" After retiring in 2005 he returned as a contract consultant in Hematology. He so enjoyed serving on the Admissions Committee of Mayo Medical School. Meeting so many bright and eager young people helped him know that the practice of medicine would be in good hands.

Robert married the love of his life, Julia Ann Petersen in 1960. The two met during the college production of "Guys and Dolls". Robert had a beautiful tenor voice (which he shared his entire life) and Julie was the music director. She says when she saw him, she knew she was going to marry him. The life they shared was filled with opportunities, adventures but mostly love. He wrote in a journal once "I am particularly proud of the women in my life, Julie and my four daughters who are all talented, caring kind and tolerate me". We did not tolerate him. We loved him and were so very proud of him, he was...a kind, honest, caring person. Rob enjoyed traveling; Mexico, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, France, Denmark, Crete, Holland, Germany, Italy and Japan. He visited every US state except Alaska. His hobbies which he also shared with Julie included fly fishing and golf but his chief joy was visiting his children and grandchildren. Fourteen years ago, Bob and Julie bought a vacation home close to the Yellowstone River in Livingston, Montana. It became a gathering place for family and friends who enjoyed honing their fly-fishing skills and visiting Yellowstone Park. He has lived a beautiful life. His determination brought him through any difficult situations he might have met on the way. He was such a goodman. We will miss him.

Obituary Preview: Andrew "Andy" Mikkel Reinke, age 38, of Rochester, Minnesota died unexpectedly after a brief illness, on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at his home in Rochester.

Andy was born on June 1, 1985 to Roland and Patricia (Runde) Reinke. He grew up in Rochester attending Century High School where he graduated in 2003. He went on to Rochester Community and Technical College to study Criminal Justice. Following graduation up until his death, he proudly served in Olmsted County as a Detention Corporal.

Andy married Angela Johnson on September 13, 2014 and in their union had two beautiful boys, Thomas and Cameron whom he deeply loved.

Andy enjoyed hunting; especially deer and snow goose hunting. He also enjoyed simply being outdoors, including golfing, fishing, making sure his lawn was to his liking, sitting around a campfire and adventures to various breweries.

Andy would do anything for "his people". He always seemed to know someone who could help with various projects or advice. He cherished his family and friends.

Andy is survived by his wife Angela; two sons, Thomas and Cameron; father Roland Reinke; mother Patricia (Stephen) Stensrud; siblings Nicole (Kenny) Loftus, Chad (Angie) Stensrud, Erik (Dana) Stensrud, and Steve Stensrud JR.; father in law Steve (Judy Burk) Johnson; brother in law Dan Johnson; sister in law Kathie (Brandon Hall) Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother in law Darlene Johnson.

Obituary Preview: Peter G. Weisbrod, 77 of Rochester, MN died unexpectedly on Sunday morning at his home.

Peter George Weisbrod was born July 10, 1946 in Wabasha, MN to Charles and Hazel (Setterlund) Weisbrod. Peter grew up in Elgin, MN and graduated from Elgin High School in 1964. During his youth, he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Winona State College graduating in 1968 with a degree in Education. Peter then joined the Peace Corp for two years in the Philippines. After returning to Rochester, Peter began working for the Rochester Public Schools, and taught reading to elementary-age school children. Peter was united in marriage to Cheryl Puck on November 22, 1975, in Sioux Valley, MN. They made Rochester their home and have lived there ever since. He later went to Mankato State and earned his Master's Degree in Education. Peter retired from teaching in 2002, but really never stopped teaching as he remained dedicated to teaching his grandchildren.

Peter led a life of service. He always put others before himself, and found joy in being able to help whenever and wherever he could. He was skilled in many crafts including woodworking, auto mechanics, and home remodels, to name just a few. Many home improvement projects were completed over the years with a perfect partnership of Cheryl's ideas and Peter's skills.

His children and grandchildren brought him immense pride and joy. He was a dedicated coach for his children's basketball and soccer teams, and remained their #1 fan throughout each one's life journey. His seven grandchildren kept him young and were the light of his life.

Peter is survived by his wife Cheryl, sons Adam (Jen), Mike (Stacey), Bryan (Jen), grandchildren Lincoln, Harper, Cameron, Griffin, Grayson, Amelia, and Ethan. He is also survived by his brother Charles (Myrlee) , sister in law Jan (Dale) Knips, father in law Arlo Puck, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Hazel, mother-in-law Lois Puck, sister-in-law Julie Puck, and brother-in-law Kenneth Puck.

A brief review includes his youthful endeavors as a farm hand, a thespian, student of the ministry, a soldier in Vietnam, a farrier, a hobby farmer, a master pipe fitter, the CEO of Klamm Mechanical, a Rodeo hand, Santa, and a Low Budget Tours founder.

He went on to become a Chief of Staff for the Analysis Corporation in VA, one half of the "Bob and Ceal" show, a captain of the boat "The Magical Affinity", a Marco Island regular, a world traveler, a Chesapeake Bay angler, a k-9 keeper to Oreo, an artist of many mediums including the written word and unforgettable artistic party platters and most recently an aspiring retiree in Georgia.

Throughout his life, his loved ones were his pride and joy. He was deeply proud of each of his children and grandchildren for the beautiful individuals they became, and held continued gratitude to his children's mother, Bonnie Klamm. He made fast and strong friendships wherever he went, and those friendships were truly valued and fulfilling throughout his life. His partner in all things for the last 20+ years has been Cecilia Hayes. Together they built dreams, took adventures, made memories and shared the burdens and joys of this life and an eternal love.

There are many ways to say it: He was unforgettable. He broke the mold. He was one of a kind. Indeed, Robert was unconventional in every way. For him, rules were merely suggestions, and suggestions were optional. He could effortlessly turn the most mundane of days into an unforgettable adventure. On each adventure he always brought home photos, gifts and stories that he shared freely. He was "over the top" in everything - his style, his words, his thoughtful gifts, his humor, but mostly with his generosity. He was generous with his expression of love, his time to be supportive, his skills to fix anything, and his efforts to show up for his loved ones. His funny antics and infectious laugh will always be remembered. His presence will be deeply missed.

Obituary Preview: Donald Lloyd, 92, of Rochester, Minnesota, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the Season Hospice House in Rochester.

Don was born on January 15, 1931, in rural Monroe, Nebraska, to Hugh Evan and Annabelle (Leggat) Lloyd. He attended Okay country grade school and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus, Nebraska. He served in the Army from 1952 through 1954 at Fort Bliss Texas and Fort Stewart Georgia.

He married Thelma Josephine Ternus on November 12, 1955, at St. Francis Church in Humphrey. They farmed in the Humphrey and Lindsay area until 1978, when they retired from farming and moved to Columbus. Don then had an busy career as a realtor and auctioneer until his retirement at the age of 80.

Don played on the Cornlea baseball team as a young man and enjoyed the game his entire life. Don and Thelma enjoyed ballroom dancing, and they danced to many of the well-known big bands of their era. They also enjoyed traveling, including visits to cousins and ancestral family sites in Wales and Germany. Additionally, they were avid card players. Don was a member of the Rochester Korean War Veterans Club and served as Commander of the group for three years. He enjoyed his friends in the Rochester "Old Geezers" breakfast group, and he went to the gym religiously until shortly before his death.

After Thelma's death in 2014, Don reconnected with a childhood classmate, Elaine Nansel Westring of Stromsburg, Nebraska, who became a beloved member of the Lloyd family; she survives. Additional survivors include daughters Margaret and Linda of Rochester, Minnesota, son John (Andrea) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and daughter Susan (Lynn) Williams of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren Shane Williams and Rachel Lloyd of Denver, Colorado, and Taylor Williams of Tacoma, Washington.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Thelma, sister Margaret Ann, and brother Robert Evan. Memorials are suggested to the Rochester Korean War Veterans Club or the Postville Welsh Cemetery in care of the family.

The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care provided to Don by the staff of Seasons Hospice.

Obituary Preview: Joann M. Karges, age 75, of Rochester, MN passed away September 1, 2023 at the Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester, MN.

Joann Mildred Karges the daughter of Alfred C. and Mildred (Dammann) Karges, was born on June 11, 1948 at the Owatonna City Hospital in Owatonna, MN. She began her Christian faith life when she was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodge Center, MN. She also attended grade school at Grace Lutheran Church. She graduated from Dodge Center High School in 1966. Following her graduation, she attended the Rochester School of Practical Nursing and earned her LPN degree. She worked 40 plus years at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Later on she went back to school to obtain her degree as an operating room technician and worked there until her retirement.

Joann's faith life continued to grow as she was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She praised her Savior by singing in the sounds of praise choir, attending Rebecca circle, leading a Christ Care Bible Study and taking part in the Rochester Servant Event.

Joann's favorite pastime was photography. She continued to praise her God by taking beautiful pictures of His nature. She enjoyed day trips with her sister, Pat, and spending time with her great nephews, Wyatt and Levi, was also a joy for her. They would go to the park, walk her furry friend, Gus, attend holidays and birthday parties where she would spoil them.

Joann is survived by her sister, Pat and Bob Fitch of Pine Island, MN; niece, Angela Fitch and great nephews, Wyatt and Levi of Pine Island, MN; step-brother, Don and Charlott Wilhelm and family of Dodge Center, MN; step-sister, Illene and Martin Peterson and family of Rochester, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Mildred; sister, Kathryn Ann Karges; grandparents; nephew, Bob Fitch Jr.; and step-sister, Mary Kraemer.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 869 7th Avenue SE, Rochester, MN with Pastor Adam Koglin officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Redeemer. Interment will be at Pine Island Cemetery, Pine Island, MN.

Tim was born on August 2, 1960 to Daniel and Susanna (Schlink) Richie in Winona, MN. Tim grew up in Winona and graduated as Valedictorian from Winona Cotter High School in 1978. He went on to attend St. Mary's College in Winona graduating in 1982. Tim married Kathy Kent on May 12, 1984 in Winona. Tim was a passionate worker and was employed by a variety of companies including IBM, Lakeview Technology, CIBER, IBM Global Services, SPSS, Thompson Reuters, Supervalu, US Bank, Backbone Consultants and Compeer Financial. He also owned a small consulting business of his own.

Tim enjoyed playing basketball, softball, golfing and bowling in his free time. When his son Craig was young, he enjoyed attending his sporting events. He also enjoyed watching his favorite Minnesota sports; Twins, Vikings, Wild and Gophers.

Tim volunteered his time taking part in the Rochester Morning Pride Lions Club as Treasurer and holding various leadership positions in District 5M1, serving on the board of local youth sports associations, as well as being part of the Leprechauns of Saint Paul.

Tim is survived by his son Craig (Megan) Richie of Denver, CO; former spouse Kathy Richie; siblings Eugene (Rosanne) Richie, Marilyn (Curt) Marquardt, Linda (Darrel) Douglas, Thomas (Debbie) Richie; brothers-in-law Richard Iverson, Dale Kent; and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Russell J. Weinschenk, 81 of Rochester, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Hawarden Regional Healthcare in Hawarden, Iowa. Russell John Weinschenk "Coach Weinschenk"

Russell was born in Osage, IA, five days before Christmas on Dec 20, 1941, to Melvin and Gertrude (Walstad) Weinschenk. He was one of 5 siblings and the last person in his family to go to heaven.

Russ graduated from Osage High School in 1960 and also earned a college degree from DeVry Technical Institute. He was a hard worker from his early days at H & W Grocery, a plumber's helper, and at Bullis Electric all in Osage. Uncle Sam drafted him into the Army where he served at Ford Hood. He received an honorable discharge and a letter of commendation noting him as an indispensable soldier. Later in life his wife secured his name on the Veteran's memorial at Soldiers Memorial Field in Rochester, MN. He worked for IBM for 38 years. His contributions included co-inventor of the High Voltage Crystal Driver, AS 400 team, patents, and special recognition awards.

Russ married the love of his life Janice Rosenberg on May 7, 1966, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They celebrated 57 years of marriage and delighted in raising 4 children and welcoming 11 grandchildren. They were presented the Eagle Award from Lourdes in 1994 for their joint service efforts. In their advanced years, they lived together at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa. In February 2023 they were Valentine King and Queen and danced and sang Patsy Cline's song Side by Side.

Russ was a member of the St. John's Parish in Rochester, MN, for 57 years. He joined the parish upon moving to the community and happily gave his time and energy as a CCD Instructor, Eucharistic Minister, Boy Scout Leader, Lourdes Senior Party, Lourdes Auction, St. John's Theater Set Production, Founder of the St. John's Softball team, and coach for many, many, sports teams for the catholic schools. His four children attended St. John's Elementary School and all graduated from Lourdes High School. He also contributed to his community as a blood donor and was recognized for the milestone of 15 gallons.

Ask anyone and they will tell you that the favorite memory of Russ was him as "Coach Weinschenk". He coached his 4 children in all of the sports they played, and it is estimated that he coached about 500 children in the game of basketball for 40 years. He loved to volunteer and was proud of his 60-0 basketball season in 1996-97. He was also the videographer for the Lourdes High Football team for decades, being presented the Gene Eiden Award for Excellence for his skills. His love of all things sports lent itself to one of his most favorite honors which was carrying the 1996 Olympic Torch as it made its way through Rochester, MN.

Russ was surrounded by his 21 family members in his last days. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife Janice; children: Kim Illg (Jon), Emerson, Reagan and Dominick; Steve Weinschenk (Lynn), Derek (Sylwia), Kyle and Collin; Angela Ericson (Chad), Raiden and Payton; and Mindee Mullen (Mitchell), Hudson, Ella and Ashton; brothers-in-law: Ray Card, Gene (Betty) Rosenberg; sisters-in-law: Josie Weinschenk and Judy Fox; and many nieces and nephews.

Greeting Russ in heaven are his granddaughter, Emma Ericson; his parents; sisters: Sonya Angell and Colleen Card; brothers: Marc Weinschenk and Jerome (Lorrie) Weinschenk; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Leonard); and brothers-in-law: Marlow Angell, Glenn (Arlene, Irene) Rosenberg, Dale (Delrose) Rosenberg, and Wayne Rosenberg.

Obituary Preview: Nancy Ann Bergerson was born November 30, 1945. She was raised in Mable, MN. She passed away peacefully on August 8, 2023. She was surrounded in love by her daughters and grandkids.

Nancy was a talented floral designer for Bachmans / Carousel in Rochester. She then worked a full career at the Government Center and was also an election judge. She enjoyed many years of retirement.

Nancy was very creative and loved making crafts, decorating her home and tending to her flower gardens. She loved to read books, sew, knit and crochet. The Vikings and The Twins were two of her favorite things to watch on tv. She was famous for her brownies.

She was always active in her church and enjoyed bible study.

Nancy leaves behind her 3 daughters; Paula Tice (Aaron), Pam Bergerson, Penni Kittelson (Zeb), 6 granddaughters, her calico cat Callie, her Mom Lois Johnson, and siblings Larry (Linda), Margie (Jack), Brian (Julie) and nieces and nephews.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her Dad, our wonderful Grandpa, Arden Johnson.

Obituary Preview: Dean Alan Anderson, age 66, formerly of Duluth, MN and of Rochester, MN passed away peacefully after an epic battle with melanoma on August 5, 2023 at his home in Rochester, MN.

Dean Anderson was born November 17, 1956 in Duluth MN. His parents, Howard and Doris (Broman) Anderson, were lifelong residents of Duluth. He attended and graduated from Central High School in 1975, then found his first employment at Anderson Furniture. After this, he had a long and fulfilling career with the Duluth Fire Department (DFD), serving the city primarily out of Station Number 4 on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, and retiring in 2008.

Dean married Mershon E. Anderson on June 24, 1978. They later divorced.

He then met the love of his life, Cynthia O'Brien, and they were blessed with almost 20 years of a true partnership.

After retirement from the DFD, he worked at the hobby farm in Rochester, doing many projects to improve the property and building custom wood pieces for his many customers.

Dean enjoyed life, was a life-long learner, and loved making beautiful things in his workshop. He enjoyed spending time at home working on many "do it yourself" projects, especially perfecting his end grain cutting boards. He participated in numerous hobbies over a lifetime including wood working, horseback riding, J-24 sailboat racing, water-skiing, motorcycling, SlingShotting, 4 wheeling, back country snowmobiling, bowling, shooting and traveling to warm places in the winter months. He truly loved his many cats, favorite being Lizzy, and found peace and joy in their constant companionship.

He was especially proud of the 2 lake homes that he built on Island Lake, MN.

Dean was also a giver of himself, participating in numerous melanoma-related studies at the Mayo Clinic.

Dean is now at peace and was blessed with the loving care provided by his partner, Cynthia, and the support of the Mayo Hospice program as well as caregivers from Home Instead.

He is survived by his partner, Cynthia O'Brien of Rochester, MN; brother, Dennis (Lois) Anderson of Truckee, CA; a niece Krista (Dennis) Connors of Beaverton, OR and nephew Kyle (Tamara) Anderson of San Luis Obispo, CA. Two grandnieces, Kenadie and Sonja and two grandnephews, Soren and Gresh. Also surviving is Kim Heytens, partner of brother, David.

Wes was born on March 24, 1954 to Dale and Loretta (Schultz) DeVries. He grew up in Rochester and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1972. After high school, Wes went to work for Red Wing Shoe Company in the Shipping department and retired in 2001. He married Terri Reuter on March 18, 1983 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester.

Wes enjoyed watching hockey of any kind, going to John Marshall basketball games, and going for rides to the casino. He loved to travel; whether it be a vacation with his grandchildren or a trip to go see his son Brian wherever he was stationed. Wes loved to spend time with his family.

He was born June 18, 1978 in Alamosa, CO to David and Mary Brewer. He spent his younger years in the San Luis Valley of Colorado and graduated from Sargent High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, briefly attended the University of Montana, and was an excellent electrician.

Bryan deeply loved his daughters. He also loved all aspects of the outdoors, created delicious meals, and had passion for his dogs and plants.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Jason.

Survivors include his daughters Cheyenne, Kendyl and Charlee; his parents; Brother Benjamin (Jenifer); Sister Amanda (Jeremy Sanchez); and extended family.

Obituary Preview: Ruth E. Squillace, wife, mother, teacher, artist, opera lover, world traveler and adventurer died on Friday, August 4, 2023. Widow of Zanti D. Squillace with 65 years of marriage, they were a generous and loving couple with a strong sense of family. Theirs included five children and many others who were drawn to an atmosphere rich in thought and creativity.

Ruth was proud of her Finnish heritage. Her sisu, her deep inner strength and perseverance in the face of adversity, not only helped her weather losses and challenges, but taught us the same. Many knew her easy and friendly demeanor, yet she cherished quiet time to practice her passion of art. She created much that many find pleasing, although that was not her sole intent.

Her determination also surfaced in her second trip to Nepal to trek the Everest Himalayas with her daughter Karen. Ruth was 77 on that trekking adventure. Ruth and Zanti produced many travel presentations of their journeys which included Europe, Africa, Middle East, China both before and after the opening, and many other countries.

Ruth and Zanti also spent much of their time at Mt Olive Lutheran Church and with their friends there. They were very involved in the church and devoted to both their community and their religious beliefs.

Ruth is survived by children David (Diane), Paul (Sandy), Steven (Kim) and Karen, and grandchildren Phillip, Saralyn, Tim, Anna, Joseph, Maria, Emily, Rosemary, Laura, and Tony as well as two great-grandchildren Liam and Jacob.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Zanti, son Richard, and half-sisters Aili and Marietta, and half-brothers Rudolf, Uno, and Arnold.

Memorial Services are planned for Saturday, October 14, at Mt Olive Lutheran Church, 2380 18th Ave NW Rochester, MN, visitation 10 am to 11 am, service at 11 am, light luncheon at 12 noon.
